Mainstream cinema is back. If there’s any big theme to the past year in film, it’s that. It may not seem like much of an accomplishment, but four of the top 10 grossing films from this past year were also critical hits: Avatar, Up, The Hangover, and Star Trek.

The musicalization of movies is a popular trend nowadays. Unfortunately, the general fodder for such shows is Disney films or relatively lowbrow comedies (who’s excited for First Wives Club: The Musical?). Seeing that this month not only marks the end of a year, but also the end of a decade, it only seemed appropriate to compile a list of the best films of the last 10 years. The films here not only fulfilled their duty as entertainment, but also qualified as great art, socially revelant, and spot-on critiques of culture.
